Cupcake Crawls are not for the faint-hearted.

We all know what Sundays are for. Grocery shopping. Laundry. Cleaning. “Being an adult.” When faced with such a sad reality, there is only one thing to do: eat cupcakes instead.

With so many gourmet cupcake shops popping up all over the city, my 2 girlfriends and I decided it was time to sample some of Toronto’s best – enter The Sugary, Heavenly, Eat-till-you-might-puke-on-the-sidewalk Cupcake Crawl!

So, how does one begin a day of gorging on cupcakes?

Like this:

Eggs Veronique

Say hello to Eggs Veronique from Le Petit Déjeuner, a Belgian-Canadian restaurant with a brunch menu as mouth-watering as the lineup is long. Once the warm-up meal was under our belts, we moved on to stop #1: Desmond and Beatrice.

We got off to an ambitious start, ordering 3 different cupcakes to sample: Banana Peanut Butter, Red Velvet, and Bailey’s Chocolate.

D & B Cupcakes

Red velvet was the unanimous favourite, with a cream cheese frosting to die a horrible, horrible death for. Out of all 3 stops, this one definitely had the best ambiance. Long after the cupcakes had been devoured, it was hard to leave. We sat in this gorgeous cozy spot by the window, soaked up the warmth of the sun, and enjoyed the music – which just happened to be a playlist of all my favourite 90’s songs.

Next, stop #2: Sweet Bliss. The owners of this charming Leslieville shop were incredibly friendly, warm people who just ooze that “I love what I do for a living” vibe.

By this point you could practically hear the hum of sugar coursing through our veins, so we opted to just sample 2 cupcakes between us: Carrot Cake and Coconut.

Sweet Bliss

I must say I’m not a huge fan of carrot cake. Luckily, this was not carrot cake. It was a gift from the dessert gods. BY FAR the best cream cheese icing I’ve ever had. Cupcake #2’s batter was coconut but with a hint of lemon, topped with more heavenly cream cheese icing and coconut sprinkles. So. Good.

On the cab ride to our final stop, I developed chest pains and a legitimate fear that I was having a heart attack. I asked my friends if it’s possible to drop dead from eating too many cupcakes. They laughed and shrugged. The pain continued and we rode on. Hey, if I was going to die at least I would die happy, surrounded by the cupcakes I MEAN PEOPLE that I love.

That takes us to stop #3: Dlish Cupcakes.

By this stop we were eating more out of sheer determination than desire. So we figured sharing 1 cupcake would suffice.

It was strawberry – and look, real strawberry chunks inside!

It was pretty good but by this point we were bonafide cupcake connoisseurs and thought the cake batter was a bit stale, and the icing wasn’t all that it could be. Still, all in all it was a successful day!

Oh and after our last stop, I met my family at a restaurant for a heavy pasta dinner. I win at eating.
